ACADEMICS AT GALLUS ACADEMY
our students explore the world around them and make friendships that last a lifetime

The elementary school division, which encompasses third grade through seventh grade, is composed of unique learners and a dedicated teaching staff, who utilise the latest instructional technologies to implement a curriculum designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation.

Through a variety of cross-curricular lessons and activities, teachers foster the development of core competencies, such as collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving. Throughout the school day, elementary students have a number of courses that help lay a strong foundation for future academic achievement. Students receive a well-balanced education that focuses on the whole-child, ensuring that each individual learner is engaged, healthy, safe, supported, and challenged.

Foundation (Grades 3-4)
Third through fourth grade at Gallus Academy represents the foundational years of our educational journey.  In the Foundation phase, we foster creativity through hands-on projects and exploration. Curiosity meets capability in an environment designed for young minds to flourish. Students at this level experience learning as a journey of discovery, where mastering academic foundations goes hand in hand with developing essential life skills. You'll find students tackling real-world math problems, collaborating on science investigations, diving into literature, and expressing themselves through the arts.

They learn not just to read, write and solve problems, but to think critically, work effectively with others, and develop the confidence to take on new challenges. The Foundation phase at Gallus Academy is a place where making mistakes is celebrated as part of learning, where questions are encouraged, and where every student's unique path to mastery is honoured and supported.

Sankofa (Grades 5-7)
Fifth through seventh grade are pivotal as children experience significant social and emotional growth. During this phase, learners who have mastered the basics of literacy, numeracy, communication, and social skills transition into a more structured curriculum complemented by an emphasis on realising their academic potential.

The Sankofa phase represents an important time of growth, discovery, and emerging independence. At Gallus Academy, we've crafted an experience that honours this unique developmental stage while recognising that each student has unique needs allowing students to to revisit and strengthen foundational concepts, as needed, before diving deeper into subjects that spark their curiosity. We foster a strong sense of connection and purpose, ensuring that students feel both supported and valued as they navigate these formative years. This environment encourages them to more confidently identify and express their unique voices and gain greater self-awareness as individuals, becoming increasingly more active and engaged community members.

Nature Education

Gallus Academy emphasises the integration of outdoor learning and sustainable living in all of our student activities. This strengthens life skills, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and self-esteem. Students in all grades have numerous opportunities to learn about ecosystems, local geography and environmental issues through hands-on experiences like field studies, gardening and nature journaling.

As students advance through the elementary school years, outdoor learning can be used to enhance learning in nearly every subject area by providing a real-world context for academic concepts. In the Sankofa phase (Grade 5-7) outdoor education programs include weekend hikes and immersive conservation experiences such as nature walks, camping and cultural expeditions that incorporate concepts like measurement and data analysis.
